CARE presently operates a very successful castrating and neutering programme to diminish the hundreds of unwanted puppies on the Island and without your continuous help and the support of our local vets, we would not be able to continue.

We have a CARE van which helps to collect the strays which are then taken into town, operated on and re-released after 2 days. We then place a CARE collar and tag which indicates they have been successfully dealt with.

Until we can afford to buy some land to build a shelter this is all we can offer although our fostering programme is working extremely well, as once the animals are ready for rehoming we can send them to our new homes within weeks.

Judy Quinn, who heads the donkey rescue side, is permanently on the road collecting abandoned or injured donkeys and presently, single handedly, has over 50 to look after and find new homes – a huge and expensive operation but extremely rewarding.

  Gypsy

This is Gypsy. She was found by a Dutch couple who were renting a house in the Ropa valley. They wanted to take her home with them but there was not enough time to arrange this as the Dutch airlines are more pedantic about the rules than some of the German ones. Consequently, Marion who heads the CARE team, took her into her own home until a new family from Germany came forward. She was an adult dog, which makes it harder to find a home, but nevertheless she is very happy and settled with her new family.

Brigadier

After 3 months in a foster care, Brigadier found a loving home in Germany.

  Puppies

Four more puppies that eventually left one of our foster homes were to find new homes in Germany.
  Norman

Ah Norman. What a lovely dog. He was left tied to a gate having been found by an English couple on holiday who contacted CARE. We don't know if you follow football but we called him Norman after an old footballer from the seventies called Norman Hunter whose nickname was "Norman' bites your legs' Hunter. He didn't really bite, it was just affection and happiness to be given some attention at last. Norman went to Germany last week. We put a letter in with his passport asking his new owners to contact us with news and pictures of him in his new home. Again there were tears at the airport, this time the CARE teams!.
  Bones

This is Bones . He was one of two very young dogs that turned up in a village a few weeks ago. An Englishman, who has a house here, had him and his sister ' Rags' dumped outside their house. A picture of Rags follows below. Bones was found in far worse condition than his sister, Rags and we took them both to the vet who gave them injections, worm and flea treatments, and a good brush up.

The good news is that they only stayed here for a few weeks before a home was found for them together in Germany. We have asked their new owners to keep us informed of their progress.
  Rags

This is Rags. Sister to Bones, who is now happily homed in Germany with her brother Bones.
  Bonnie

Bonnie. She was brought to us by an English couple who were working on the Marina in Gouvia. They had taken the dog in after finding it wandering around the Marina as a puppy. They were forced to return to England because of personal reasons and needed somebody to take the dog. We found her a home in Germany after a few weeks of her living in our house.
  Small Puppies

This is a photo of the three puppies which are still in foster care. This picture was taken three weeks ago. They were found on the main road near Vatos and had obviously been separated from their mother at too early an age. However , after several weeks of intensive bottle feeding they have survived and are booked on the plane to Dusseldorf tomorrow night. Another result from a seemingly hopeless case!
  Dino

Here is a picture of Dino. Another dog that we kept for several weeks. We went to the vet to be told that a lady had brought this puppy to be put to sleep. The puppy was too old to be put to sleep so we placed Dino (named after one of the vets) in our care. He left for Germany, on Saturday with Gypsy.
  Bella

This lovely female dog was picked up this summer along with 9 puppies which subsequently have all been found new homes. Here is an update picture of Bella in her new home in Germany, a testament to what successes CARE can achieve.
