(PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO END OF NEWS SECTION FOR SOME WONDERFUL REHOMING STORIES AND PHOTOGRAPHS AND SOME NOT SO HAPPY STORIES)

Dear CARE supporters,

We had a call from the Ark who are the other rescue charity on the Island who we work closely with to see if we could help with two adorable dogs that were found wandering in Benitses and after a good dinner and bath we are so happy to say the dogs are now back with their very grateful owner!

We also received a lovely email from a family in the UK who, after 6 long months of waiting, collected Rossy from quarantine kennels in England.  Formely known as Spiros, here is a lovely picture of him in his new home.  There have been a few minor scuffles with their cat but nothing serious and are now tolerating each others company as there are plenty of treats and cuddles as rewards and its seems to be working very well.

Carole who is the President of CARE went to visit Rossy in Petersfield where he lives with his lovely new Dad and Mum called Mark and Hilary.  He had just been on a holiday to Dorset and had a wonderful time in the rain (better than his parents.....) and looks a picture of health and happiness.  A huge thank you to Mark and Hilary for giving Rossy a wonderful and loving home.  We are also pleased to report that he and the cat are getting alot better now!

The aim at CARE is to rescue animals, help them get back into a more suitable society where they will be cared for properly. An example of this was Cream. He was tiny when he was rescued, infact so small he could fit into his food bowl.

Cream was re-homed and also re-named Bobby, and five months later, he has grown into a lovely dog, which is obvious for all to see below.

Act of Mercy by students on field trip to Corfu.

After a call we received from a group of English students on a field trip, this article was published in the Cornish Guardian and also in The Newquay Voice which shows how working with CARE can have positive results. Please read the artice on this link: http://www.thisiscornwall.co.uk/Dog-Act-mercy-students-field-trip/story-12731243-detail/story.html

A big thank you to Faye and her team for highlighting Spiridon's plight and please see his picture at the shelter on the re-homing page.  Thank you also for raising £48 for CARE at the Cornish show.

A Happy Story!

Last summer, an English family rented a villa in  Corfu and found a couple of puppies who had been abandoned. During their stay, they fell in love with Ruby and Marlon and have decided to re-home them both back in the UK. As a result, the two are now living a very happy and wonderful new life with their new family in the U.K.

And Another!

Samson, formerly known as Steven, was re-homed by a lovely family who took him when he was a puppy. When he originally arrived at his new home, he was very worried, but with gentle persuasion and lots of loving care, he has settled in very well, loves playing with the four children and has settled in very well.

A huge thank you to Piers and Claudia Williams for donating a wonderfully large, wooden dog kennel and basket - much appreciated.

CARE has found a van!!!

Very exciting news and jjust waiting for the signage to go on the exterior but fantastic news and thanks to all who donated on the fund raising evening in London as without you this would not have been possible

We are also looking into purchasing some land for a new shelter and have found some wonderful land in the North of the island which is ideal as totally flat, has its own water and very close to a main road which means far more people will be able to find and visit the shelter!   We sadly dont have enough funds to purchase the land or build so any fund raising ideas would be so welcome but worryingly, we need traise at least 50,000 euros which is a huge amount to find?  Any ideas, please let us know - thank you

A very sad story about Romeo

CARE tried desperately to save the life of this poor dog.  Cheryl received a call to say that a dog had been seen tied to a tree with no food or water and subesquently found out its owner had had to leave for Athens on business and could not return.  This poor creature was left to perish on his own, with no love or even a call to ask for our help.  Cheryl picked him up but he was so covered in ticks, they had literally sucked every bit of blood out of his poor body.  The vet came immediately and administered antibiotics and an injection to help him recover his blood levels.  Sadly, he then had a seizure only to recover and amazingly manage to eat a little food.  He was put on a drip for the night although exremely hard to administrate as his veins had all collapsed.  Having survived the night, Cheryl gave him some breakfast and water which he managed to eat.  Sadly, at midday, he had a massive fit followed by heart failure and died in Cheryl's arms.  He was a beautiful and loving dog and did not deserve to end his days like this.  Unfortunately, we could not prosecute the owner who refused to confirm Romeo was his - what a sad and unnescessary ending.

Another desperate story about a call Cheryl received about a boxer who was tied to a rope without and food and water and no owner in site.  Although Cheryl and the vet did everything to try and save his life, it was too late but feel we should show you the photograph of this poor dog when he was found.  There is absolutely no excuse for this and if only we could find out who the owner was, he or she would have been prosecuted.   We are sorry if you fnd this upsetting but we need to stop this terrible cruelty.

Greece has entered the grim worldwide recession which, as you all know is very bad news for all charities.

CARE has struggled to get through last year but after an amazing fund raising evening in London in December 2010 we have raised much needed funding to keep the charity going and the most enormous thank you to everybody who helped and contributed.  We have had press coverage on the event and has appeared in the April issue of Tatler.   To all who sent a donation, we send our sincere thanks, as without your support we couldn't have made it and most of our rescue animals would have died.   Funds sadly are running out so CARE will be putting on a fantastic cricket match in September 2012 in Hawkley, Hampshire in the hope of raising more funding.  It should be a great day out so watch this space for more news and updates on the event.

Cheryl who runs CARE on the island works tirelessly to do what she can but has found the situation in general much worse than previous years. Many English residents have had to sell up and go back to the UK as there is very little work around and sadly have had to leave their pets, so we have been inundated with re-homing requests.

HOT NEWS

We have also spread our wings to the Island of IBIZA and delighted to annouce we have joined up with an amazing charity already established on the Island who do a fantastic job.   More information to follow.

Many of you have asked if CARE is registered in the UK as you would like to arrange direct debits into a UK CARE account - well the good news is we now have a UK bank account (see under bank details for information) and have started to process of obtaining UK charitable status so we will update you with news as we hear.

PLEASE PLEASE continue to support us at CARE, even though we understand how difficult it is with the current economic climate. Remember, without you, there is no CARE.

Our sincere thanks again from all of us, and most importantly, the animals in Corfu.

Carole Langton

President of CARE

They also had two siblings, one of which sadly died the day after she was brought to the shelter. Ollie and Alfie have both been re-homed in Germany and their sibling is now very happily living with a family in Corfu.

Ulli (formerly know as Malcolm)

We never put Ulli on our adoption page as we feared he would never be rehomed as he had a tendancy to bite and we were very worried for his future which was looking extremely glum.  Cheryl persevered until he snapped one day so a call was put through to our German colleagues to ask their advice.   Uta, our lady in Germany, managed to find a person with considerable dog skills as a dog whisperer so he was flown there immediately.  As you can see he is now a very happy and healthy dog and loves other animals and no longer bites.  What a great ending.

Sent from Kanes new owners "My first holiday snap whilst on holiday in Groemitz. As you can see it was all very stress free and I had such a lovely time. There were many other dogs there and having completed my Dog School I no longer require a leash, so things are certainly looking up. Thank you."

OTE

" I was found in the village of Skripero, starving and looking very malnourished, by a concerned woman called Wendy. She very kindly picked me up and took me  to the vet for a checkup. Apart from being very thin and half my "normal weight", I was not too ill, so following a course of vitamins and regular food, Cheryl collected me from Wendy and I am now living with Cheryl as a permanent houseguest, joining the other two boxers she has. As you can see, I am doing very well, and I am very very happy. Thank you so much. Lots of Licks. OTE"

Bob (formely known as Chicco!)

i'My new name is Bob and my family and friends mostly call me 'little donkey' as I have such big ears!  I wanted to say hello and tell you how much I like it at the seaside.  My new Mum often goes to the beach with me and we meet lots of other dogs and have lots of fun with them.  I also love my bath but Mum wont let me have one at the moment as it is too cold.  I hope it gets warmer soon so I can swim again.  Dad often takes me for walks with my best friend Trixie who lives with me who I like very much.  Bye for now - licks and woofs Little Donkey, Mum, Dad and Trixie'

Sampson and Hercules

Sampson and Hercules are just 2 of the 8 puppies we found in a plastic bag where they had been for over 24 hours. Only one or two days old we thought it only humane to euthanize them as not only did they look half dead but we thought they were simply too young to survive. As we arrived at the clinic we were told the vet was away on an emergency visit so Carole who is the president of CARE took them to her house via the chemist were 8 baby bottles and powdered milk were purchased. All her house guests rallied round to help and a 2 hour, round the clock feeding rota was administered. Against all odds they all survived and are totally beautiful, happy and wonderful pups who have all found fantastic and caring homes. Carole has kept 2 to add to her other 7 rescue dogs at her home.

We would also like to say a very special thank you to one particular friend of Caroles for covering the cost of all 8 puppies including vet bills, microchips, blood tests, passports and flight costs - Libby, you have been amazing and thank you.

Hella

Betsy was a terrified puppy when we found her but look at her now in her new home with her fellow housemate!  She has now been named Hella and after only 10 days with her new family, she is unrecognizable both in looks and temperament.  She was terrified to go near a road and parked cars but now loves her walks where she runs the entire way – her new family absolutely adore her so what a great ending.

norman   Norman

Ah Norman. What a lovely dog. He was left tied to a gate having been found by an English couple on holiday who contacted CARE. We don't know if you follow football but we called him Norman after an old footballer from the seventies called Norman Hunter whose nickname was "Norman' bites your legs' Hunter. He didn't really bite, it was just affection and happiness to be given some attention at last. Norman went to Germany. We put a letter in with his passport asking his new owners to contact us with news and pictures of him in his new home. Again there were tears at the airport, this time the CARE teams!.
line
bones   Bones

This is Bones . He was one of two very young dogs that turned up in a local village.  An Englishman, who has a house here, had him and his sister ' Rags' dumped outside their house. A picture of Rags follows below. Bones was found in far worse condition than his sister, Rags and we took them both to the vet who gave them injections, worm and flea treatments, and a good brush up.

The good news is that they only stayed here for a few weeks before a home was found for them together in Germany. We have asked their new owners to keep us informed of their progress.

This is Rags. Sister to Bones, who is now happily homed in Germany with her brother Bones.

bonnie   Bonnie

Bonnie. She was brought to us by an English couple who were working on the Marina in Gouvia. They had taken the dog in after finding it wandering around the Marina as a puppy. They were forced to return to England because of personal reasons and needed somebody to take the dog. We found her a home in Germany after a few weeks of her living in our house.

small puppies   Small Puppies

This is a photo of the three puppies which are still in foster care. This picture was taken three weeks ago. They were found on the main road near Vatos and had obviously been separated from their mother at too early an age. However , after several weeks of intensive bottle feeding they have survived and are now living in Dusseldorf.  Another result from a seemingly hopeless case!

dino   Dino

Here is a picture of Dino. Another dog that we kept for several weeks. We went to the vet to be told that a lady had brought this puppy to be put to sleep. The puppy was too old to be put to sleep so we placed Dino (named after one of the vets) in our care. He left for Germany with Gypsy.

This lovely female dog was picked up this summer along with 9 puppies which subsequently have all been found new homes. Here is an update picture of Bella in her new home in Germany, a testament to what successes CARE can achieve.
