Upon
admission to the shelter, all dogs are assessed by our official
veterinarian, Markos Lougiakis, and vital medication is administered,
including routine worming, protection from parasites, and all the
necessary vaccinations required under European law. Thereafter,
each dog is given its own personal European Veterinary Vaccination
Certificate of Health, which remains with the dog throughout its
life.
We re-home our dogs not only in Greece (where we work closely with
local people) but also overseas where we have contacts from many
professional worldwide organisations. Our track record after 4 years
has exceeded all expectations and CARE has so far re-homed over
1,000 dogs and puppies.
We now have the full support of the local community of Thinnalion,
headed by Mayor Spiros Varelis. With the ever increasing numbers
of stray and unwanted dogs and puppies throughout the Island, we
are presently negotiating for a new and larger Shelter to be built
on community land. The building costs of the Shelter are to be funded
by the Greek government but the running costs will have to be met
by CARE.
Now that we have acquired charity status, CARE can officially fundraise
and will be reliant upon public support for future running costs.
Donations will help us to maintain the efficient running of the
Shelter and will greatly contribute towards the expensive but essential
medical requirements currently in place. This regime allows dogs
to travel abroad to their new home or allows them to be re-homed
locally with a clean bill of health.
The
current Shelter in Archaravi has sadly closed but CARE will hopefully
continue in temporary premises until a new Shelter will be built
next year. Fundraising for this exciting project is underway both
in Corfu and the UK and your donations are extremely welcome and
desperately needed.
